The Director of Neurosurgery Research is a new tenure-track, basic/translational science position within the Department of Neurosurgery at the West Virginia University (WVU) School of Medicine in Morgantown, WV. This position will serve several vital roles within WVU, including facilitating and directing research of Neurosurgery Residents and Fellows, and collaborating with other WVU researchers on projects related to neurosurgery, including stroke, brain trauma and/or other acute neuronal compromising conditions. The Neurosurgery program is increasing its residency program in two ways. The complement of residents is increasing, as well as the time committed to research. In addition funding is in place to allow for further increases in complement. A significant focus of the program moving forward! is an increased importance of the role of research for both t! he faculty and the residents. The successful candidate is expected to have a strong and sustained independent research program that can be broadened at WVU and that can serve as a primer for Fellows and Residents. Evidence of extensive research collaboration is expected. In addition to service as a member of the Department of Neurosurgery, the successful candidate will be a member of the Center for Neuroscience and the Center for Basic and Translational Stroke Research at WVU and can participate fully in the West Virginia Clinical and Translational Science Institute.
The Department of Neurosurgery ( http://medicine.hsc.wvu.edu/neurosurgery/ ) has an active residency training program and nine full-time faculty with expertise in cranial, neurovascular, pediatrics, spine, epilepsy, functional, neuro-oncology and skull-based subspecialties. Strong collaboration exists with Neurology, Neuroscience, Neuropharmacology, and Neuroradiology; our number of neurovascular proce! dures is among the highest in the country. West Virginia University Neurosurgery faculty members staff three regional hospitals in addition to West Virginia University Hospital (WVUH), which serves as the academic hub. WVUH is a 531-bed teaching hospital, a nationally recognized Level One Trauma Center, and is well equipped with spacious operating rooms and a Gamma Knife. The Biomedical Research Building is located on campus and contains newly designed laboratory space. In addition, the Blanchette Rockefeller Neurosciences Center and the Center for Disease Controlâs National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health are both located within the academic complex. West Virginia University is a full service academic institution with Schools of Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, Dentistry, and Public Health. Close collaboration occurs with the Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center and Chestnut Ridge Center psychiatric facility.

Candidates for this associate/full professor position must have a PhD, MD or MD/PhD, with a record of significant achievement in basic, translational, and/or clinical research, including an active, federally funded research program. The successful candidate should have experience in mentoring students, residents, fellows, and junior faculty. Credentials and accomplishments should indicate a strong, nat! ional/international reputation in basic, translational and/or clinical research.
