Virginia Commonwealth University is seeking a dynamic, results-oriented Major Gifts Officer for the Massey Cancer Center. Reporting to the Executive Director of Development & External Relations,! the Major Gifts Officer assists with the major giving program for the Cancer Center. The Major Gifts Officer will assume a key role in the strategic development of major gift activities including the cultivation and stewardship of prospects and donors. Incumbent is charged with meeting philanthropic targets and contributing to the overall growth of private philanthropy in support of the Massey Cancer Center. This position works closely with the Executive Director, Director of Major Gifts, Assistant Director of Stewardship, and other Massey development office members to move donors and prospects through the donor pipeline. This position collaborates with members of other VCU development units and VCU Advancement Services to enhance relations with these professional colleagues and ensure Masseyâs fundraising interests concerning shared prospects are represented. Incumbent will actively engage with the Centerâs leadership, medical and research staff, Advisory Board and vo! lunteers in major gifts and grateful patient fundraising activ! ities.
Responsibilities: Incumbent will have extensive experience in the field of fundraising that will allow for cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of major gift donors, including poise and ability to ask for significant gifts and communicate the case for support to a variety of audiences. The position will develop and manage a robust portfolio of major gifts prospects and grateful patients, and will properly match funding needs with donor intent. Incumbent will manage prospect information and strategically plan and cultivate solicitations, demonstrating mature interpersonal skills to work effectively and collaborate with a high achieving staff. Position provides leadership for the planning, guiding and implementing of all major gifts efforts, including development of giving opportunities for major gifts prospects and grateful patients/families. Incumbent represents Massey Cancer Center with legislators, top University officials and major donors with! confidence and professionalism during meetings and activities.
Qualifications: Masterâs degree in related field required or equivalent in education and major gifts experience. Qualified candidates will demonstrate a highly collaborative and energetic management style and a high level of motivation, creativity, passion and initiative. Excellent communication skills are vital. A minimum of 5-10 years of progressive major gifts fundraising experience with proven success in securing major gifts of $25,000 and higher, preferably in a medical and/or academic environment is required. Demonstrated ability to handle multiple, complex fundraising activities simultaneously and coordinate solicitation strategies in decentralized environment. In-depth knowledge and fluency in fundraising operations is required. Extensive knowledge of analytical and metrics reporting is required, with experience in deploying fundraising metrics and tracking and analyzing results. Excep! tional communication skills required. Advanced problem-solving skills a! nd ability to work with all levels of staff is required. Selected candidate will have demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at Virginia Commonwealth University.
