The Respiratory Therapist/Pulmonary Function Technologist is responsible for providing basic and advanced respiratory care to adult and ger! iatric patients at the VA Medical Center and is knowledgeable of treatment for all age groups of patients. The therapist plans, implements, and evaluates the effectiveness of the care given to our patients and is able to operate a variety of equipment including: mechanical ventilators, Continuous Positive Pressure devices (CPAP), Bi-level Positive Pressure devices (BIPAP), pulmonary function equipment, oxygen monitors/blood-gas analyzers, and others that are in the realm of respiratory care. Testing and procedures will include, but not limited to, pulmonary function testing, exercise stress, pharmaceutical and regular nuclear stress testing, EKG, holter monitor set-up and analysis, ventilator set-up and care, nebulizer therapy, endotracheal intubation assistance, and other procedures within the scope-of-practice for a Respiratory Therapist/Pulmonary Function Technician.

Qualifications & Evaluations

Time-in-Grade Restriction - Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements. The grade may have been in any occupation but must have been held in the Federal service.

QUALIFICATIONS

BASIC REQUIREMENTS as required under VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G11, Registered Respiratory Therapist Qualification Standard, Veterans Health Administration: Major study in an academic field related to the health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. The basic requirements ! of this Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) position is a certificat! e as an RRT from the NBRC (National Board for Respiratory Care) and a registry number, or a certificate from another body which the NBRC recognizes as its credentialing equivalent. This includes registration based on either:

(1) Having fulfilled the requirements and passed the registry examination administered by the NBRC since 1983; or,
(2) Having fulfilled the requirements and passed the registry examination for a registered inhalation or respiratory therapist administered by the (1) National Board for Respiratory Therapy from July 1974 through 1982 or (2) American Registry of Inhalation Therapists from 1961 through June 1974.

You will be evaluated on the following Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other characteristics (KSAOs) as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position:

Ability to perform complex respiratory procedures with minimal supervision.

Ability to participate with physicians, nurses and other staff in planning! respiratory treatment.

Ability to provide emergency or critical respiratory care.

Knowledge of a full range of respiratory disease processes and appropriate interventions with minimal supervision.

Knowledge of the cardiopulmonary system, blood gas procedures and interpretation, mechanical ventilation, C-PAP, Bi-PAP, and EKG.

Ability to apply critical thinking skills.

Knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, and procedures associated with the delivery of respiratory therapy treatment.
