Histotechnologist Summary: Performs a full range of laboratory procedures associated with the preparation of specimens for the anatomical study of their microscopic structure. Provides care to Dermatology/Mohs patients with complex diagnoses. As the participant in care, treats all internal and external physicians, nursing staff, and patients/families as valued customers striving to provide advocacy and service. Assists the medical staff to achieve the goals of the program and to ensure the plan of care is carried out. The histotechnologist is a resource person for other personnel in the laboratory area and is responsible for teaching and oversight of other laboratory personnel in the MBR Cancer Center Clinic. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: include the following. 1.0 Performs in a timely manner, the basic and complicated procedures (e.g., specimen accessioning and processing, inventory, ordering, special stains for cellular structures, immunohistochemistry and DNA testing) designed to meet the needs of the department in support of the hospital's mission and goals. 1.1 Follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) to produce accurate reproducible results. 1.2 Completes assigned workload within established turnaround times by flexing organization of work according to request ordering status (i.e., routine, STAT, ASAP). 1.3 Operates basic and advanced laboratory equipment/instruments (e.g. cryostats, tissue processors, microtomes, knife sharpeners, embedding centers, pH meters, distillation system, balance and autoclave) consistent with manufacturer's instruction manual and SOP. 1.4 Prepares and stocks as required reagents and solutions to complete procedures requested according to SOP. 1.5 Restocks as required, the work area to assist co-workers in the performance of their duties. 1.5 Differentiates all medical and technical problems, as required, with referral to RN, manager, or medical/ nursing directors. 1.6 Participates, as required, in the training and evaluation of medical students, residents and other medical staff, as established by hospital and cancer center policies. 1.7 Perform on a daily basis routine cleaning of work area (i.e., wash glassware, clean paraffin spillage, gross room counters, microtomes). 1.7 Must demonstrate, after receiving instruction and training, knowledge of the patient care requirements for all age groups as required by standard operating procedures. 1.9 Teaches and serves as a resource to staff. 2.0 Accepts and accessions patient specimens, assists physicians in the training of Residents and technicians at the surgical cutting bench and in frozen section procedures to aid in patient diagnosis in support of the hospital's mission and goals. 2.1 Accepts patient specimens and assures the proper collection and labeling according to SOP. 2.2 Accessions and assigns specimen numbers via computer for each specimen received. 2.3 Assists the resident or attending physician while grossing (e.g., labeling cassettes, entering information in computer, and placing cassettes in proper fixative). 2.4 Assists the resident or attending physician with frozen sections (e.g., cutting, staining, cover slipping and labeling). 2.5 Assists physician or RN with frozen sections as requested (e.g., cutting, staining, cover slipping and labeling), according to SOP. 2.6 Assists physician with surgical procedures including suture removal and wound dressing. 3.0 Prepares and produces microscopic slides using a wide variety of tissue techniques (i.e., fixation, embedding, sectioning and standard and complex staining) in a timely manner to produce accurate reproducible results to meet the needs of patients as requested by the physicians, in support of the hospital's mission and goals. 3.1 Places cassettes in the tissue processor following SOP. 3.2 Obtains the list of embedding logs from the computer on a daily basis. 3.3 Embeds cassettes and places cassettes in the freezer (e.g., scraping excess paraffin, checking off log in each case, designate: rush, priority, ribbon), as required. 3.4 Prioritizes samples in the following order: (1) frozen (2) surgical (3) autopsies, according to SOP. 3.5 Maintains routine slide log and cuts paraffin blocks (i.e., cutting, drying, staining, cover slipping, labeling, and delivers to the requesting physicians, closing log daily), according to SOP. 3.6 Files paraffin blocks, specimen containers, and autopsy slides, on a daily basis, according to SOP. 3.7 Performs all special requests (e.g., re-cuts, special stains, immunoperoxidase, immunofluorescence, autopsies, plastics, decals), according to SOP. 4.0 Performs the quality assurance, quality control, routine equipment maintenance and troubleshooting procedures designed to meet the needs of the department in support of the hospital's mission and goals. 4.1 Performs required quality assurance and control procedures according to SOP, to assure the reliability of reagents and laboratory equipment/instruments for accurate and reproducible results to insure quality patient care. 4.2 Performs any required maintenance, calibration and quality control of laboratory equipment/instruments within the predetermined time schedule, according to SOP 4.3 Recognizes errors, problems and utilizes expertise to minor and major troubleshooting and appropriate problem resolution in a timely manner 4.4 Completes quality control records legibly and accurately 100% of the time (e.g., review of records, daily worksheets), according to SOP. 4.5 Documents all work appropriately, (e.g., blocks cut, special stains, slides, immunoperoxidase slides, frozen section slides, immunofluorescent slides, re-cut slides, autopsy and surgical slides, decals, conference, teaching and research), according to SOP. 4.6 Ensures proper autoclaving of all equipment and ensure maintenance of sterile and non-sterile equipment. 5.0 Assists the Dermatologist and Director in quality improvement activities. 5.1 Collects data for quality improvement activities and assists in developing, analyzing, interpreting, and identifying action plans. 5.2 Actively involved in the organizationâs cost reduction goals by identifying and facilitating care in a cost effective manner. 5.3 Follows established policies, procedures, and guidelines. 6.0 Maintains effective communication with laboratory sections, other hospital departments, and patients/public, as necessary to assure dissemination of information and the identification/resolution of problems to support the hospital's mission of patient care. 6.1 Answers the telephone in a prompt and courteous manner identifying self and unit. 6.2 Keeps current in all department communications (e.g., reading circulated material, minutes and procedures) incorporating new information into routine use. 6.3 Maintains accurate and legible communication/documentation logs. 6.4 Effectively communicates in a timely manner any unusual supply usage or critical supply levels to the manager to expedite ordering of required supplies for the continual service of patients. 7.0 Other duties may be assigned. Position Requirements
Education and Experience: Associate degree in Histotechnology Three years Histology experience preferred. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathologist (ASCP)as a Histotechnologist (HT or HTL).
