Summary: The Trauma Nurse Clinician (TNC) will work in concert with the Trauma Program Manager and Trauma Medical Director, to ensure optimal clinical care for the injured patient from admission through discharge, utilizing an organized, multidisciplinary approach for the delivery of care to trauma patients .The scope includes maintaining compliance with the rules required for Verification by the American college of surgeons and West Virginia State Designation of a Level I Trauma Center; participates in developing and maintaining an effective trauma performance improvement program through concurrent data collection and systems review. The TNC will work closely with the trauma system staff to meet the needs of a Level I trauma center. This clinician will interact with patients, family, physicians, nurses, and allied health providers within the hospital. Participation in hospital related or other community activities that improves the well being of the community. As an expert clinician, is responsible for the coordination of all systems/services to ensure an organized, multidisciplinary approach to the delivery of care to trauma patients. As the coordinator of care, treats all internal and external physicians, nursing staff and patients/families as valued customers striving to provide advocacy and service. Assists the nursing staff to ensure the plan of care is carried out. Assists the Medical Director to achieve the goals of the program. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: include the following. Other duties may be assigned. 1.0 Coordinates all aspects of patient care for the Trauma patient, assists with the Trauma Service surgeons’ non-trauma surgical patients as applicable. 1.1 Facilitates all phases of treatment Acts as a liaison between patients, physicians and the hospital in transitioning the patient through the health care system. 1.2 Ensures effective communication and collaboration among the health care team members, addresses inter-and intradepartmental issues. 1.3 Collects concurrent data through daily service rounds, schedules tests and coordinates follow-up care, as applicable. 1.4 Assists with daily surgical schedule as applicable. 1.5 Assists Trauma Service physicians with their clinics care as applicable. 2.0 Provides and/or coordinates education to patients/families/significant others utilizing teaching/learning theory and appropriate teaching strategies. Acts as a consultant, role model, and resource to staff. 2.1 Ensures that new patient/family/significant other education is completed. 2.2 Provides on-going education to patients, both inpatient and outpatient and evaluates the effectiveness of teaching efforts. 2.3 Ensures that each patient has the needed written teaching material. 2.4 Develops education material in conjunction with nursing staff, as applicable. 2.5 Attends discharge planning rounds to obtain necessary information for communication with home health agencies regarding patient status prior to discharge. 3.0 Assists the Medical Director and Manager, in performance improvement activities. 3.1 Initiates action to manage complex system or departmental issues in collaboration with Director/Manager. 3.2 Collects data for performance improvement activities and assists in developing, analyzing, interpreting, and identifying corrective action plans. 3.3 Assists in identifying area/systems to improve patient satisfaction, concurrently. Investigates and completes follow-up on all identified issues. 3.4 Patient review of all non-surgical admissions. 3.5 Monitors trauma guidelines/protocols. 3.6 Performs monthly chart reviews. 3.7 Is actively aware of costs associated with patient care, identifying and facilitating care in a cost- effective manner. 3.8 Assists the Trauma Program Manager in the development and revision of standardized forms, as applicable. 4.0 Provides outreach education to the community using appropriate teaching strategies. 4.1 Teaches and serves as a resource for staff. 4.2 Collaborates with the Medical Director, Manager, and Nurse Clinician â€" Trauma Research, Education and 4.3 Outreach on development of outreach programs. 4.4 Delivers community outreach activities, as appropriate. 4.5 Orients residents, physician’s assistant and medical students to trauma services. 5.0 Demonstrates accountability for nursing practice and identifies own learning needs. 5.1 Exhibits professional behavior on a consistent basis. 5.2 Demonstrates self-motivated professional and personal development by assuming responsibility for continued learning. Seeks learning opportunities both internally and externally, applies knowledge gained to patient care delivery and shares with peers to impact practice. 6.0 Other duties/projects as assigned. Position Requirements

Minimum Qualification: • Bachelors Degree in Nursing. • Five years clinical experience in nursing. A minimum of 2 years recent hospital nursing experience in emergency or trauma critical care is required. • Must possess tactful communication skills to converse with staff, physicians, patients, families, visitors, government agencies, and the public. • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail required. Certifications, Licenses, Registrations: • Current West Virginia license to practice as a Registered Nurse. (May not be waived). • TNCC Provider/Instructor preferred *Above qualifications may be waived in lieu of significant, relevant experience or accomplishments.
