Job Summary:
Under the direction of the Director/Nurse Manager, the Patient Care Supervisor (PCS) is responsible for:

Supervising all day to day activities of patient care and of service

Supporting the Associates who are providing patient care to assure efficient clinical care, patient throughput, and operational aspects of the unit

Interaction with other departments

They align resources to match the need of the patients while remaining within budget. PCSs participate with the Nurse Manager in the hiring, coaching, mentoring, evaluating, and disciplinary process. PCSs assist with budgetary staffing, operational and capital allocation and requests. PCS is part of unit based leadership team; accountable for achieving unit quality, safety, service goals, and daily operational activities on a 24-hour basis. The incumbent adheres to the mission, vision, values and strategic initiatives of MWHC and must demonstrate a commitment to quality service to patients, physicians, co-workers and the community.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities (include percentage of time spent on each): Demonstrates leadership skills, professional and positive behavior, effective communication, decision-making, and critical thinking. Demonstrates problem solving skills, conflict management, and negotiation skills with staff, physicians, and ancillary departments. Provides timely feedback and/or problem resolution. Fosters an environment for promoting teamwork in all aspects of the job, providing a customer service culture, excellent clinical outcomes, and achieving maximum productivity.

Direct oversight of specific group of unit staff. Monitors and maintains staff compliance to performance expectations. Serves as a resource, preceptor, and mentor to unit staff. Recognizes and rewards staff for a job well done. Participates in performance review process in collaboration with Manager.

Responsible for direct reports receiving required education.

Responsible for shift huddle, hourly rounding, bedside shift report, and discharge call-backs.

Provides feedback to the staff regarding any opportunities for improvement to practice. Provides shift leadership. Assures safe, effective, and efficient care of patients.

Delegates patient care activities to appropriate health care team members. Makes and revises staff assignments.

Facilitates effective interdisciplinary care. Collaborate with all disciplines by creating synergistic relationships to promote excellent care for patients and families.

Works closely with Senior Leadership and Nurse Manager to achieve unit goals by establishing and implementing strategies to include all pillars.

Works in collaboration with Associates to implement and monitor the achievement of Patient Satisfaction, Quality and Safety targets. Works within the team for the successful implementation and problem solving to achieve targets.

Incorporates evidence based practice throughout the unit to enhance outcomes and incorporates evidence-based findings into nursing practice. Implements and monitors (including direct observation) standards of practice for optimal patient outcomes. Maintains clinical competencies and is able to provide direct nursing care to patients.

Works in collaboration with Associates to implement and monitor the achievement of financial goals, to include resource utilization and financial targets. Works within team for the successful implementation and problem solving to achieve targets.

Role models the Mission, Vision, and Values of MWHC. Counsels and mentors staff informally and formally. Serves as a liaison between physicians, other departments, patients, visitors and families to resolve concerns. Investigates customer complaints and takes appropriate action and provides detailed documentation. Seeks counsel for resolution of conflict.

Identifies departmental needs regarding staffing. Assures schedule is appropriate to departmental needs and adjusts schedule according to census, acuity and targets.

Utilizes critical thinking skills in identifying potential problems, developing action plans and implementing performance improvement / LEAN initiatives.

Collaborates with patients/families to identify realistic desired outcomes. Advocates for patient rights while identifying and resolving potential conflict and concerns.

Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications:
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing required. BSN strongly preferred.

Current licensure as a RN with the Virginia State Board of Nursing required.

BLS required. Meets specific unit based AHA certification requirements.

Specialty Nursing Certifications within department specific clinical area preferred. Candidates without certification will achieve within 5 years or sooner.

Minimum of two years "in-patient" staff nurse experience required.

Membership in a professional nursing organization is preferred.

Strong verbal and written communication skills required. Experience with computerized systems and programs, such as ANSOS, Pre-Admit Tracking, Gateway, Lotus Notes, Microsoft Office, etc.
